My style is collaborative and client centered, with an emphasis client's strengths and unique abilities. My goal is to create a supportive, nurturing environment where clients feel comfortable being their full selves and exploring issues and challenges that may be blocking them from feeling fulfilled. In the first session, I make time for clients to tell me about themselves and what is bringing them into therapy. I strive to understand present challenges through a cultural lens, paying close attention to client's multiple identities (race/ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, religion, sexual orientation, ability status, age and nationality), current relationships, earlier experiences, life roles, goals and obstacles. I focus a great deal on who clients are in relationship to themselves and others, which includes an exploration of the impact of both past and present relationships in their life. This explorations helps to uncover core beliefs clients have about themselves, their values, and needs around connection. I also use my relationship with clients as a means to gain deeper insight into patterns emerging in the room which may also be evident outside of the therapy room. Finally, I explore the unique story(ies) clients are telling themselves about their life circumstances and, when necessary, rewrite portions of this story to be more congruent with the life a client desires, leading to greater authenticity and connection to the strengths and gifts they possess. I am aware that therapy should not use a "one size, fits all" approach, so I will be sure tailor therapy to client's specific needs and regularly check in about how the process is going, incorporating other interventions when necessary.
